Carroll picked up its first win over Kuemper since 2012 and did it in exciting fashion. The Tigers used a pair of first half goals to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Their defense was stingy in the 1st half, as Kuemper missed a few opportunities to get on the board. Carroll was passing the ball well offensively and Trey Hunter was able to sneak in on the backside and scored when the ball dribbled through the Kuemper defense and came out on the right side of the net. Hunter tapped it in the goal to give Carroll a 1-0 lead. Christian Best extended the lead to 2-0 with 6:27 left in the half, with a nice shot from the left side that hooked past Ethan Fitzhenry for a goal.
Kuemper regrouped at half and cut into their deficit when Tommy Fitzsimmons used the wind to spin a shot over the head of of Tanner Heithoff, who had a great night in goal. The Knights were on the board but had to wait until Isaac Evans booted a goal from deep with 4:03 remaining to tie the game at 2. Carroll had a chance to take the lead with about 2:12 left but missed a opportunity for an open look at the goal on a cross. Neither team had a good chance to score the rest of regulation and the match went to overtime.
Trey Hunter ended the match quickly, helping the Tigers claim the trophy, scoring with 8:49 left in overtime. Hunter picked up his second goal of the night and was mobbed by his team as he ran back up the field.
Carroll finished the match with 7 shots on goal, with Trey Hunter and Landon Evans each having a pair. Elias Villanueva, Blake Heiman and Christian Best had the other shots. Tanner Heithoff finished with 6 saves.
Tommy Fitzsimmons and Isaac Evans scored the goals for Kuemper and Ethan Fitzhenry had 9 saves.
The Tigers travel to Boone on Tuesday while Kuemper host Panorama at the field house.
