Coon Rapids Bayard vs West Harrison – Class 1A District 16 Final

West Harrison 75

Coon Rapids Bayard 40

The Coon Rapids Bayard’s season came to a crushing end as they faced off against the Rolling Valley Conference champions West Harrison in Denison Tuesday night.

The Crusaders had a solid start to the game, getting out 4-0 over the Hawkeyes and keeping a good pace. That lead was overtaken by West Harrison at 8-7 thanks to Walker Rife hitting back to back threes, but was taken back with a three pointer from Easton Hays at 10-8. The Crusaders were able to keep the Hawkeyes scoring to a minimum, but still had some troubles with West Harrison attacking the basket well. At the end of the first quarter, West Harrison tied the ball game at 12 points. Rife for the Hawkeyes led all players with six points while Hays and Gabe Obert led the Crusaders with three points. West Harrison’s offense started to take off as they put down another two three pointers and had Mason King go four-for-four from the free throw line. Coon Rapids Bayard’s offense still had some good production, going up against the triangle-and-two defense the Hawkeye were setting up in. Tanner Oswald drained a three pointer to keep his offense alive. Despite a decent half from Coon Rapids Bayard, West Harrison stayed ahead 30-22 at the halftime. Hays, Obert, Oswald, and Lance Clayburg all had five points in the first half.

The Hawkeyes were automatic in the third quarter and left no room for Coon Rapids Bayard to get back in the contest. West Harrison put up 30 points in the quarter and sank four three pointers with Rife, King, Mason McIntosh, and Sage Evans draining a triple. The Crusaders had troubles with fouls and turnovers in the third quarter and couldn’t find the answers to the Hawkeyes quick turnaround offensively. West Harrison led 60-30 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final eight minutes of the contest, the Hawkeyes stayed out ahead with their passing in the half court and keeping the ball away from Coon Rapids Bayard. The Hawkeyes’ dominant third quarter push allowed them to come away with the 75-40 victory.

Obert led the team with 13 points in the game while he had some nice help from Hays with nine points. Clayburg had a solid night with five points and six rebounds. The Crusader’s season will come to an end with a final record of 17-6.
