The South Central Calhoun Titans will play for a chance to go to state as they got past West Hancock in the Class 2A Region 2 Semifinals Friday night.
The Titans got in the driver’s seat and took control of the game early, getting up 9-0 in the first quarter. They controlled both sides of the ball really well and limited what the Eagles could do. Riley Batta got some early buckets that gave her eight points to lead the team while Emma Anderson added a solid five points in the first quarter. The Titans took an 18-8 lead into the second quarter. South Central Calhoun in the start of the next quarter, led by 21 points for a brief moment late. West Hancock had little answers for the Titans’ game plan as South Central Calhoun extended their lead to 34-16 at halftime. Batta still led the team with 10 first-half points while Kylee Schleisman started to drain buckets and put up nine points.
The lead that South Central Calhoun built up in the first half was slightly challenged by the Eagles to start the second half. West Hancock cut down the Titan lead to 11 points in the third quarter and looked to continue that until the Titans snapped out of their funk. South Central Calhoun ended the third by getting back up by 17 points and leading 46-29 entering the final quarter of play. That 17 point lead eventually turned into a 20 points lead with around two minutes left to play at 56-36. The scoring for the Titans was electric as they had three girls score double-digit points, those being Schleisman who led the team with 17 points, Batta who added 15 points, and Anderson who had 12 points. The Titans had a solid performance on the road as they picked up the 58-38 win over West Hancock.
The Titans will advance to the Class 2A Region 2 finals where they will take on Sibley-Ocheyedan next Wednesday.

Audubon at Newell Fonda – Class 1A Region 2 Semifinal

The Audubon Wheelers faced off against a giant of Class 1A, the defending state champions Newell Fonda, and had some good ball movement against their defense, but couldn’t keep up with the constant substitutions and fast-paced nature of the Mustangs Friday night.
Newell Fonda got out to a very quick start, getting up 7-0 in the first few minutes of the first quarter and getting up 15-2 before Audubon was able to respond with a free throw from Jaci Christensen. The Wheelers got to this exact moment in the season last year, the regional semifinals at Newell Fonda, so the Wheelers knew what they were up against. The Wheelers started to understand the full-court pressure Newell Fonda was set up in and did find ways to move the ball cross-court in transition. The Mustangs man-to-man defense allowed them to stay aggressive in the first half and force turnovers and grab loose basketballs. The Mustangs took a 28-6 lead into the second quarter. Audubon got some better scoring going in the second quarter, leaning into the Newell Fonda defense to create fouls. Jaci Christensen had three trips to the free-throw line, going four of six, and Aleah Hermansen went two of two from her lone trip to the charity stripe. The Wheelers tried to keep up with the constant stream of subs coming in and out of the game, but they just didn’t have the number of players that Newell Fonda did. The Mustangs continued to drive well to the basket and passed well to get up 48-16 at halftime.
Audubon continued to fight through the Newell Fonda defense that backed off from their full-court pressure and focused more on the halfcourt. The biggest moment was Sienna Albertsen draining two three-pointers in the third quarter as well as Christensen fighting her way for baskets in the paint. The Wheelers still couldn’t stop the Newell Fonda offense from popping off for 20 points and leading 68-29 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams allowed their bench players to play for a good portion of the final minutes of the game as the Mustangs built up a large enough lead to go into cruise control. Newell Fonda gets past Audubon for a second year with a final score of 75-39.
Christensen led the Wheelers with a solid 19 point, 15 rebound double-double. Hermansen also put up solid numbers with 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals. The Wheelers’ season comes to an end with a final record of 15-9.

The IKM-Manning Wolves’ season came to an end Friday night as they took on a familiar foe in Underwood on the road in the Class 2A Region 8 Semifinals.
Underwood started off the first quarter by keeping IKM-Manning limited on their offensive possessions and putting up points themselves, getting ahead 17-6 after the first quarter concluded. That execution continued in the second quarter where the Eagles were fully in command, throwing down 23 points and leading 40-10 at halftime. Bianca Cadwell and Mable Langel were both leaders for the Wolves on offense, putting up six points each while Cadwell had four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Underwood’s plan of attack continued to keep IKM-Manning’s points low in the third quarter. The Eagles added to their lead by 15 points and led 55-16 going into the fourth quarter. Despite the low scoring, the Wolves were able to have three girls with four or more rebounds, Cadwell with four and Taylor Ferneding and Mable Langel with five each. The Eagles closed out the game with a low-scoring fourth quarter but won in the end by a final score of 61-20.
The Wolves season will come to an end with a final record of 8-16.
