Kuemper at South Central Calhoun –  Class 2A District 5

South Central Calhoun 64

Kuemper 50

In a battle between two local teams, the Kuemper Knights traveled to Rockwell City to take on the South Central Calhoun Titans in a close game all throughout Thursday night.

The Knights got after it in the first quarter as they put the Titans in a pickle, leading 24-14 after the first quarter. That momentum Kuemper had was quickly stolen by South Central Calhoun in the second quarter. The Titans took over the game with a 20-4 performance that gave them the lead at 34-28 at halftime. The Titans starting five all nearly had double digit points in this game, and they were all led by Joshua Dietrich who ended with a 16 point and 16 rebound double-double. Kuemper’s firepower came from Michael Kasperbauer who put up a team high 14 points while Dennis Vonnahme aided defensively with three steals and four blocks.

The Knights snapped out of their snafu from the second quarter and played well in the third quarter. They started to slow down the Titans scoring and nearly matched them points wise, only losing by a point at 11-10. The Titans held on and rode their seven-point lead into the fourth quarter at 45-38. The Knights had another good performance in the final eight minutes of the game, but South Central Calhoun was just a step above them. The Titans outscored the Knights 19-12 en route to their 14-point victory with a final score of 64-50.

South Central Calhoun will improve to 17-5 overall on the season and advance to the Class 2A District 5 final where they will take on Roland Story on Tuesday, February 22nd. The Knights’ season comes to an end with a final record of 12-11.

Coon Rapids Bayard at Boyer Valley – Class 1A District 16

Coon Rapids Bayard 40

Boyer Valley 30

Coon Rapids Bayard locked horns with the Boyer Valley Bulldogs Thursday night where both teams struggled to get points on the board and their defenses got an opportunity to shine.

Neither team in the first quarter were really able to get past each other’s defense. Boyer Valley started off in a 1-3-1 zone defense look and Coon Rapids Bayard did the same. The Crusader’s offense was able to sink some shots thanks to Lance Clayburg with some nice drives to the basket and East Hays going two for two at the free throw line and getting a bucket. Coon Rapids Bayard’s 6-0 run got them off to a solid enough start and a 10-3 lead entering the second quarter. Boyer Valley’s Jaidan TenEyck drained the lone three pointer for the Bulldogs, but his impact would be felt later in this game. Both offenses continued to struggle with generating points, but their defenses looked good. Crusader’s Head Coach Cory Meyers says he didn’t expect Boyer Valley to show off their man-to-man defense in the second quarter, but his guys had to adjust. After leading 17-10 in the final moments of the quarter, TenEyck struck again with a three pointer from the corner to swing the momentum back a little bit to Boyer Valley’s corner, cutting down the Coon Rapids Bayard lead to 17-13 entering halftime. Clayburg led the Crusaders with six points in the first half.

That momentum shift for Boyer Valley was short-lived as Gabe Obert made his presence known to start the second half. Obert got a hard shot to fall to pull up the and-one attempt. While he missed the shot, Clayburg rebounded the free throw, gave it back to Obert who laid it up for a quick four points in a matter of a few seconds. Another factor that aided the Crusaders a lot in the third quarter were fouls committed by Boyer Valley. Four individual fouls, including a technical, were called on the Bulldogs, quickly getting them up to six team fouls in the second half. The Crusaders, though, faced issues of their own, free throws. They went two of eight from the free throw line after multiple opportunities at the charity stripe. Their free throw issues aside, the Crusaders kept Boyer Valley to a mere two points as they led 29-15. In the fourth quarter, Boyer Valley’s aggressive defense caused a stir in the Coon Rapids Bayard offensive strategy. TenEyck started to drive to the basket a lot more and found himself at the free throw line five times, going seven of 10. Along with a three pointer from him and Drew Volkmann, the Crusaders momentum was quickly going away. While the Crusaders made some big mistakes late in the quarter, they held on long enough for the clock to wind down and for Easton Hays to drain two free throws to make it a four-possession game. With only a few seconds left and down by 10 points, Boyer Valley was unable to do much, and the Crusaders were victorious by a score of 40-30.

Obert led the team with 17 points and added on six rebounds. Clayburg had a solid night underneath the basket with 14 rebounds and added six points, three assists, and a steal. The Crusaders will improve to 17-6 overall on the season and advance to the Class 1A District 16 Final to take on West Harrison on Tuesday, February 22nd.

IKM-Manning vs Exira-EHK at AHSTW – Class 1A District 15

Exira-EHK 46

IKM-Manning 42

The IKM-Manning Wolves went to war against Exira-EHK and it came down to the final moments to determine the Spartans the winner Thursday night.

The Wolves were out in front to start the first half with the Spartans riding their tail. The first quarter featured two ties, but it was Exira-EHK who held onto a two-point lead at 14-12 over IKM-Manning after the quarter concluded. Ross Kusel got the Wolves’ offense started off with six points in the quarter. In the second quarter both teams were popping off and no one got ahead by much. This quarter featured seven lead changes, and none were any larger than five points. This time, the Wolves were ahead by a point at 21-20 entering halftime. Kusel still led his teammates with six points on the night so far.

The start of the second half went as well as IKM-Manning could have asked for, but Exira-EHK wasn’t too far behind. The Wolves started the third quarter with a 6-0 run, extending their lead to 27-20, until the Spartans put a stop to that run and went on one of their own, going 13-4 to close out the quarter. Before the Wolves had time to breathe, the Spartans were out ahead once again by a score of 33-31 going into the fourth quarter. More back and forth ensued in the fourth quarter as IKM-Manning was holding on as much as they could. With 32 seconds left, the Wolves found themselves with control of the ball down 44-42. Despite that little momentum turn, the Wolves were unable to create any points and the Spartans closed out the game with one final bucket to win it 46-42.

The Wolves were led by Kusel who put up 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two Steals. Kristians Upmalis had a solid night too with 10 points and six rebounds. Their season comes to an end with a final season record of 7-16.

Audubon at AHSTW – Class 1A District 15

AHSTW 60

Audubon 34

The Audubon Wheelers had a solid start against a season tested AHSTW squad Thursday night, but the Vikings were too much for the Wheelers to handle in the end.

The start for the Vikings couldn’t have been better as they got out to an 11-2 lead almost halfway through the first quarter. That run came to an end as the Wheelers bounced back in the last parts of the quarter, going on a 12-2 run to lead AHSTW 14-13 entering the second quarter. Carson Bauer led the Wheelers with eight points, including a pair of three pointers. The Wheelers offensively were slowed down by AHSTW significantly in the second quarter. The Vikings kept Audubon to seven points as they put up another 13 points, and eventually retook the lead at 26-21 at halftime. Bauer continued to be solid for Audubon, leading the team with 10 points in the first half.

The Vikings really started to pull away from the Wheelers in the second half as their offense came alive. Audubon was unable to stop AHSTW from putting up 18 points in the third quarter and had some difficulties once again putting up points against the Vikings defense. AHSTW led 46-29 entering the fourth quarter. The momentum shift for the Vikings continued to help them roll in the fourth quarter. They outscored Audubon 16-5 in the final eight minutes of the game as their dominant second half brought them to a 60-34 victory over Audubon.

Bauer ended the night with a team high 16 points. The Wheelers season comes to an end with a final record of 9-14 on the season.

East Sac at Western Christian – Class 2A District 1

Western Christian 63

East Sac 28

East Sac ended their season on the road in the second round of districts on Thursday, falling at Western Christian. The Raiders struggled against the Wolfpacks suffocating defense, turning the ball over 24 times. They shot the ball well, hitting 41.1% from the field but the turnovers limited their opportunities. Western Christian built a 21-8 lead by the end of the 1st quarter and led by 23 at half. The Wolfpack played at a fast tempo and the Raiders struggled to find clean passing lanes. Turnovers turned into quick buckets as Western Christian transitioned from defense to offense well.

Tyler Schmitt and Aden Vondrak combined to hit 9-17 shots with Vondrak hitting 2 of 3 from three. They scored 21 of the team’s 28 points. Schmitt finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Vondrak had 8 points and 3 steals.

The Carroll Tigers closed out the regular season with a solid non-conference win over Harlan on the road and extended their win streak to five games.
