Shenandoah At Kuemper

Kuemper 67

Shenandoah 34

It took a while, but Kuemper finally got rolling and pulled away late in the 3rd quarter, rolling to a 33-point win. The Knights started slowly, then slowed down more in the 2nd quarter as Shenandoah made a run, trailed 25-20 at half. The Knights settled for threes against the Mustangs 2-3 zone and the shots weren’t falling. Kuemper finished 8-28 from beyond the arc, thanks in part to a late run from Michael Kasperbauer and Patrick Hensel. They combined for 4-3’s in the 4th quarter. Kuemper tried a number of different rotations until they found a group that clicked. Carson Kanne and Kasperbauer teamed up in the backcourt and DJ Vonnahme took over in the paint. Shenandoah trailed by less than 5 points, midway through the 3rd quarter but Kuemper pulled away to take a 45-27 lead heading into the 4th.

Kuemper finished the game, shooting 41.7% from the field but only hit 28.6% from deep. They passed the ball well, assisting on 20 of their 25 made baskets. The defense forced 12 steals, while only turning the ball over 8 times.

Michael Kasperbauer led the team with 19 points, DJ Vonnahme finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Isaac Evans added 8 rebounds and Dawson Gifford dished out 4 assists.

The win improves Kuemper to 10-10 overall and 7-5 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. They travel to South Hamilton on Thursday to wrap up the regular season.

Carroll at Boone

Boone 46

Carroll 40

The Carroll Tigers battled back and forth with the Boone Toreadors but couldn’t quite get past their lead Friday night.

Boone got things started against the Tigers, getting out to a 5-0 lead early and eventually an 8-5 lead. Tanner Gotto for Carroll kept the Tigers in the contest late in the quarter, putting up three points to keep them within three points at 8-5. The Tigers’ struggles on offense continued into the second quarter as did Boone. Both teams didn’t go off and score a high number of points, rather it was Boone who consistently found ways to stay slightly ahead of Carroll all night long thanks to their defense that kept Kaleb Booth and Nick Macke grounded. Boone grabbed a 17-11 halftime lead at Gotto led the Tigers with five points and Evan Hammer added four.

The second half for both teams looked to be much the same, until the end of the third quarter. The Tigers trailed 27-17 at one point in the quarter, until they went off for 10 points in the final 35 seconds to tie the game at 27 points. Booth got that scoring run started with two stolen inbound passes and Boone gave up the ball with a travel, allowing Carroll to get four quick scoring possessions. Boone did end the quarter with a buck to stay ahead 29-27 going into the fourth quarter. Carroll did a nice job of keeping up with Boone in the fourth, eventually tying up the game again at 35 points. Boone took over the lead at 39-35 with 1:11 left to play, and just like they did all game, found ways to stay ahead. The Toreadors overcame a Tigers team that didn’t quit and overcame 10- and eight-point deficits by a final score of 46-40.

Individually for the Tigers, Booth led the team with 11 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocks. Macke and Hammer both had solid nights with eight points scored each. The Tigers will fall to 8-8 overall on the season and 7-6 in the Raccoon River Conference. They will round out their week of competition with a home game against Denison-Schleswig on Saturday, February 5th.

Paton Churdan at Ar-We-Va

Ar-We-Va 79

Paton Churdan 72

The battle of the Ar-We-Va and Paton Churdan Rockets was a nailbiter as both teams had multiple players score 15 or more points and both scored 70+ points in Friday’s Rolling Valley Conference matchup.

Both teams got their offenses out to an explosive start, but it was Paton Churdan who shined and stayed ahead by three points at 20-17 going into the second quarter. Both offenses continued to find ways to score and attack the rim over and over, but it was Ar-We-Va who didn’t allow Paton Churdan to go off for another 20 points and give them a chance to keep the game close down by one point at 37-36 going into halftime. Cooper Kock and Joe Carey were trading buckets back and forth all night long as they both recorded 20+ points in this game.

The Ar-We-Va Rockets were able to balance their offense with some good defense in the third quarter, containing Paton Churdan to a game low 16 points. Ar-We-Va continued to be automatic from the field, putting up their best quarter with 25 points and taking the lead at 61-53. Both offenses still had plenty left in the tank in the fourth quarter as they both almost put up another 20 points each. Paton Churdan’s troubles from the third quarter made a big difference in the fourth as they were unable to get their defense to slow down the Ar-We-Va scoring enough to come away with the win. With their solid third quarter performance and nearly matching Paton Churdan in the fourth quarter at 19-18, the Ar-We-Va Rockets were able to pull away with the high scoring 79-72 victory.

Individually for Ar-We-Va, Cooper Kock led the team with 26 points and 15 rebounds. He was aided by Will Ragaller who put up 18 points, Breaden Kirsch who added 13 points, and Emmett Neumann who scored 10 points. South Central Calhoun 70

Manson NW Webster 34

The South Central Calhoun Titans left it all out on the court as they went wire-to-wire against Manson NW Webster to win their 15th game of the season Friday night.

The Titans wasted no time getting points on the board in the first quarter, getting up 17-8 going into the second quarter. The defense for the Titans was on point as well, with Joshua Dietrich hustling for three blocks and Eli Wheelock nabbing five steals. The success for the Titans continued well into the second quarter as they limited what Manson NW Webster did offensively, while putting up 20 points to take the 37-13 lead heading into halftime.

The Cougars in the third quarter gave the Titans a little of their own medicine, putting up their best quarter in the third with 14 points. South Central Calhoun wasn’t fazed offensively as they put up 17 of their own points and still stayed ahead 54-27 going into the final eight minutes of the game. The Titans got some of their bench players some valuable varsity experience, with Antonio Sanders impressing with six points, five rebounds, and a steal. Coon Rapids Bayard at Boyer Valley

Coon Rapids Bayard 53

Boyer Valley 47       (OT)

Despite going scoreless for nearly seven minutes at one point, the Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders found a way to grab a huge conference win over Boyer Valley to pick up their 11th victory in their last 12 games Friday night.

The Crusaders were able to get off to a good start offensively against the Bulldogs, putting up 12 points to lead 12-7 going into the second quarter. Despite leading, the Bulldogs utilized an 8-0 run to start off the second quarter and kept Coon Rapids Bayard scoreless for the first three minutes of the quarter. Boyer Valley crushed the Coon Rapids Bayard lead and took over at 21-13 with three minutes left in the first half. The Crusaders found a way to bounce back in the final moments of the quarter and tie up the ball game at 21-21 going into halftime. While moments of the first half were ugly, the Crusaders had a solid night all around with Gabe Obert, Tanner Oswald, and Lacey Clayburg getting double digit points in the end.

Both teams went point for point in the third quarter, trading the lead and tying up the game plenty. No team had the clear advantage over the other as they stayed tied at 30-30 going into the fourth quarter. Another slobber knocker happened in the fourth with the Crusaders matching the Bulldogs point-for-point. Coon Rapids Bayard led 38-37 with around three minutes to play, Boyer Valley took the lead at 39-38, and the game was once again tied at 42 apiece with around a minute to play. Boyer Valley hit a clutch three pointer that gave them the 45-42 lead with less than 15 seconds left to play. Coon Rapids Bayard had enough time to get the ball down court to Oswald and called a quick time out. With not a lot of time to accomplish it, Oswald got the ball from the left corner and drained a big three pointer to tie the game up at 45 all with three seconds left. Oswald on the ensuing Boyer Valley offensive possession got a steal that was almost made for a layup, but it rolled out, bringing the game to overtime.

The Crusaders, with the momentum in their corner, continued to attack the basket well in overtime and were able to outscore the Bulldogs 8-2 and win a close contest at 53-47 on the road. Head Coach Cory Meyer says the biggest difference in this game where free throws as his guys went 13 of 16 from the charity stripe while Boyer Valley only went four of seven. Oswald, with his late game heroics, also led the team with 17 points along with eight rebounds, an assist, four steals, and a block. Clayburg got himself a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Obert finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and an assist, steal, and block. The Crusaders have now won 11 of their last 12 games to extend their record to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in the Rolling Valley Conference.

The Crusaders continue the regular season push with a home game against Glidden Ralston on Monday, February 7th.

East Sac at Southeast Valley

Southeast Valley 59

East Sac 55

The East Sac Raiders battled back late in the fourth quarter against Southeast Valley to trail only three points, but the Jaguars used a late momentum shift to come away with the conference win Friday night.

East Sac and Southeast Valley were trying to scope each other out in the first quarter as not one team was clearly out in front of the other. Tyler Schmitt was finding ways to get fadeaway shots from inside the lane and led the Raiders with eight first quarter points, but Kolson Kruse was right there with Schmitt, putting up seven points for the Jaguars. Southeast Valley held on to a one-point lead going into the second quarter at 12-11. The Raiders had a bit of a hard time against a Jaguar offense that got comfortable. Kruse put up another five points, Kaleb Scott threw down a dunk and five points in the second quarter, and Tre Fisher put up four points. The Jaguars limited Schmitt’s scoring to a mere two points in the second quarter and that gave them the opportunity to get up 29-22 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Jaguars were called on two technical fouls that ended up costing them big points in the later parts of the half. Aaron Graves was able to do what Schmitt does best, read the defense from inside the lane and find ways to drive to the basket. Graves had eight third quarter points as the Jaguars maintained their lead. The technical foul issues started when Kruse was called for a technical. Luke Wright and Schmitt both drained a pair of free throws to cut down the Southeast Valley lead to 47-35 going into the fourth quarter. Karter Ludwig was a big piece of the puzzle for East Sac in the final quarter as he drained two three pointers and some crucial free throws. Ludwig was fouled from beyond the arc, and on that foul, Southeast Valley was called for a second technical, giving Ludwig three uncontested free throws, which he made two, and Schmitt made the two free throws from the technical call. The biggest free throws came from Luke Wright who cut down the Southeast Valley lead to 53-50 with a few minutes left to play. The Raiders had opportunities to cut the lead down further, but late steals from the Jaguars was what sealed the deal. Southeast Valley finished at the rim late and with a few made buckets were able to escape with a 59-55 victory over East Sac. Raiders Head Coach Todd Bontrager says the defensive effort from his team was strong, keeping their 1,000-point scorers’ way below their season averages, but points off turnovers was the big difference in this game.

Tyler Schmitt was solid once again for the Raiders, recording a team high 17 points along with 10 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Luke Wright got himself a double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals. Karter Ludwig with his three-three pointers ended the night with 11 points. The Raiders will fall to 9-11 overall on the season and 7-5 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They will close out the regular season with a conference road game at South Central Calhoun on Tuesday, February 8th.

CAM Anita at Glidden Ralston

CAM Anita 40

Glidden Ralston 29

The Glidden Ralston Wildcats had a solid first half performance against CAM Anita highlighted by their defense, but the Cougars’ defense sped up the Wildcats, allowing CAM Anita to come away with a conference win Friday night.

The Wildcats rode off the momentum of their defense to start the contest. Wildcats Head Coach Tyler Shipley says his team moved the ball well in the first half and their defense allowed them to get points in transition. Glidden Ralston kept CAM Anita down to a game low four points as they put up nine. In the second quarter, the Wildcats kept threatening the Cougars on defense and stayed on point offensively. They stayed ahead of CAM Anita once again and took a 20-12 lead into halftime. The Wildcats had a big half from the free throw line, going nine of 10.

The second half wasn’t as nice to Glidden Ralston as the first half was. Coach Shipley says CAM Anita started to pressure his guys’ offense, which sped up their scheme way too much to execute effectively. While the Wildcats started to get back to their pace after a while, the Cougars used that momentum to get back in the game and cut down the Wildcats’ lead to two points at 25-23. At the start of the fourth quarter, John Whitver hit a massive three pointer with six minutes left to get Glidden Ralston up 28-23. That three pointer was the last bucket besides a lone free throw that the Wildcats were able to get on the board. CAM Anita went 17-1 in the final few minutes of the game and went five for seven from the free throw line to seal the deal. The Cougars outpaced the Wildcats late to win it 40-29. Glidden Ralston in the fourth quarter only went one of three from the charity stripe. Coach Shipley was happy with the productivity from his guys, especially on the defensive end of the court.

Glidden Ralston continue their regular season schedule as they will travel to take on Coon Rapids Bayard in Rolling Valley Conference action on Monday, February 7th.
