The Carroll Tigers fought all night long Tuesday against Bondurant Farrar in a battle in the Raccoon River Conference, but it was the Bluejays who got away with strong scoring from the second quarter on.

The Tigers got off to a solid start on both sides of the ball, limiting the Bluejays scoring to 10 points while they held onto a one-point lead at 11-10 going into the second quarter. Josie Ayala took charge in the quarter and allowed the Tigers to hold on to that lead. The Bluejays roared back in the second quarter, electrifying their offense and getting plenty of points on the board. The Tigers led by four points to start the quarter, but Bondurant Farrar soon enough went 17-9 in the second to lead 27-20 at halftime.

The Bluejays continued their onslaught of scoring in the third quarter as they limited the Tigers scoring on defense. Bondurant Farrar started off with a 9-0 run that gave them a huge momentum boost and eventually led to them extending their lead to 42-26 going into the fourth quarter. Camryn Schable and Addison Klocke both had solid double-digit point scoring nights for the Tigers, but those performances couldn’t stop Katelyn Lappe from Bondurant Farrar who had 30 points on the night. That performance from Lappe gave the Bluejays enough momentum to put up 19 points in the fourth quarter and eventually escape with a 56-41 final score over Carroll.

Schable on the night had a team high 17 points while Klocke put up 13. Ayala had a strong rebounding night with nine rebounds. The Tigers will fall to 6-10 overall on the season and 2-10 in the Raccoon River Conference. The Tigers have another conference challenge ahead of them on Friday, February 4th when they travel to take on Boone.

Kuemper at Harlan

Harlan        74

Kuemper    52

The Kuemper Knights had a valiant comeback in the first half against Harlan, but the Cyclones had an even bigger second half performance Tuesday night in Harlan.

Early on the Knights would find themselves in a 14-3 rut against the Cyclones and eventually 16-7 at the end of the first quarter. The scoring deficit would be erased by the Knights as they went on a lengthy scoring run of their own. After being down 14-3, Kuemper went 24-11 up until halftime, with five threes made in that period, three from Catherine Mayhall, one from Kora Thomsen, and one from Aubrey Heuton. That big momentum shift gave the Knights the 27-26 lead. Not only did the offense step up, but so did the defense, keeping Harlan to a mere nine points in the second quarter.

The Knights had another slow start in the second half. Harlan utilized the slow start to readjust their offense and put up nearly 30 points in the third quarter. The Cyclones retook the lead and extended it by nearly a mile at 55-37. Kuemper in the fourth quarter was able to get some late shots to fall. They were down 12 with four minutes to spare and had to change their defense to a man-to-man and press, allowing their offense to score a bit better. Despite some late points falling for the Knights, Harlan also found success from the field, putting up 20 points and eventually coming away with the 74-52 victory.

Kuemper Head Coach Tyler Tryon says they kept two of Harlan’s leading scorers to low points in the first half and put up eight three pointers for one of their best played games of the season. The Knights will fall to 4-16 overall on the season and 2-8 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. Kuemper’s week will finish up with a homestand against conference opponent Shenandoah on Friday, February 4th.

The IKM-Manning Wolves dropped 70 plus points but had too many turnovers as they picked up a conference victory on the road at Missouri Valley Tuesday night.

From start to finish, both teams had difficulties with turnovers and ball handling, but the biggest difference was the IKM-Manning defense and scoring. The Wolves had a solid enough start as Taylor Ferneding and Abby Neiheisel both put up four points to help their team get up 12-5 after the first quarter. The Wolves were setting up Mabel Langel inside the lane to help determine how best to approach the Lady Red defense, and they figured it out well in the second quarter. The Wolves started off with a quick 9-0 run featuring Ferneding and Langel as a dynamic duo offensively as they put up seven and eight points respectively. Combined with their full court defensive pressure, not allowing Missouri Valley to swing the momentum to their side, IKM-Manning put up 25 points to take the 37-13 lead into halftime. Langel and Ferneding both led the team with 11 first half points each.

The Wolves and Lady Reds continued to see turnover issues in the early parts of the second half. IKM-Manning started off with a quick 5-0 run that allowed them to continue to shoot the ball fairly well, putting up 16 points and extending their large lead to 53-24. The Wolves’ defense continued to shine going into the fourth quarter where IKM-Manning closed out the game well. Three Wolves ended the night with six or more steals. Bailee Germer had six, and Macie Doyle and Neiheisel had seven each and as a team, the Wolves grabbed 23 steals. The final eight minutes for IKM-Manning included going nine of 11 from the free throw line, Bailee Germer putting up seven points, and the Wolves coming away with a statement 75-36 road victory over Missouri Valley.

The Wolves will improve to 6-11 overall on the season and 6-8 in the Western Iowa Conference. They will continue their week of competition with a non-conference home game against Boyer Valley on Thursday, February 3rd.

Audubon at LoMa

Audubon    57

LoMa          44

The Audubon Wheelers have now gone 4-1 in their last five games as they picked up another strong Western Iowa Conference win Tuesday night, getting revenge against LoMa.

The Wheelers got to work in the early parts of the first quarter, going on a 6-0 run. The Panthers put an end to that scoring run with a field goal and two three pointers to eventually get up 8-6 after the first quarter concluded. LoMa traded the lead with Audubon to start the second quarter, with Audubon grabbing the lead at 9-8, and LoMa taking it back at 13-11. Once the Wheelers tied the game at 13 all, the momentum shifted significantly in their favor as they went on a 10-3 run to end the quarter and lead 23-16 at halftime. Audrey Jensen and Aleah Hermansen were a big part of the scoring for Audubon, as they combined to score 32 of the Wheelers points.

The Wheelers and Panthers had nearly similar points in the third quarter as LoMa tried to make up for their hiccups in the first half. Audubon had their seven point halftime lead cut down to four at 26-22 by LoMa, but it was short lived as Audubon went 11-7 in the late parts of the quarter to lead 37-29 going into the fourth quarter. The Wheelers continued to roll offensively and keep the lead out of the hands of LoMa. The Panthers were unable to cut the Audubon lead down any further than 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Wheelers put up 20 points to take home a statement 57-44 win.

The Wheelers will improve to 13-7 overall on the season and 10-3 in the Western Iowa Conference. The Wheelers close out their week with a non-conference game on the road at CAM Anita on Friday, February 3rd.

A fast start for Ar-We-Va was enough as they held on for their third win of the season. The Rockets went up 9-0 in the 1st quarter with an aggressive approach that led to baskets from Delaney Schurke, Jamie Hausman who both hit threes and Maggie Ragaller who made a layup and scored on a free throw. West Harrison scored five straight, cutting the Rockets lead to 9-5. Delaney Schurke hit Jamie Hausman for back-to-back threes, extending the lead to 10. The lead was pushed to 16 when Timberlen Koch hit Maggie Ragaller for a three and Ar-We-Va led 23-7 late in the 1st half. The lead remained in double figures the rest of the half and Ar-We-Va led 27-13 at the end of the 1st half when Timberlen Koch found Jamie Hausman for a bucket.

West Harrison opened the 2nd half with a 5-0 run, but Timberlen Koch answered it with a bucket and free throw to put the Rockets up 31-18. Ar-We-Va only scored five points in the 3rd quarter but made enough defensive plays to lead 32-23, heading to the 4th quarter. West Harrison made another run in the 4th quarter, pulling within 5 (36-31). Delaney Schurke had a huge offensive rebound and basket and Jamie Hausman scored to put the Rockets up 38-31, Maggie Ragaller and Timberlen Koch each hit a free throw as Ar-We-Va got a big offensive rebound from Ragaller on a missed free throw and they were able to run the clock out for the win.

Jamie Hausman had a team high 17 points along with 8 rebounds. Maggie Ragaller scored 12 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Timberlen Koch scored 6 points but had several big passes that led to key baskets, leading the Rockets with 6 assists to go with 10 rebounds.

The Rockets improved to 3-15 overall and 3-10 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They host Paton Churdan on Friday.

The South Central Calhoun Titans were caught a bit by surprise by Southeast Valley Tuesday night in the fourth quarter as they had to close out the game late for the win.

The Titans started off with a close scoring run with the Jaguars as the Titans held on to a three-point lead at 14-11 after the first quarter ended. The Titans’ defense was able to create opportunities to score on the other end by keeping Southeast Valley to seven points in the second quarter. The Titans extended their lead to 26-18 at halftime. The start of the third quarter couldn’t have been better for South Central Calhoun as they got up by as much as 16 points. That 16-point lead was quickly cut down by Kenna Scott, who went off for 12 points and single handedly cut down the Titan lead down to six points at 38-32. The fourth quarter went back and forth between both teams as they raced to stay ahead of each other. While the Jaguars were able to outscore the Titans 12-10, with South Central Calhoun’s strong first half, they were able barely escape with the 48-44 win over Southeast Valley.

The Titans will improve to 14-4 overall on the season and 6-4 in the Twin Lakes Conference. South Central Calhoun is in another conference matchup on Friday February 4th as they take on Manson Northwest Webster on the road.

CAM Anita at Coon Rapids Bayard

Coon Rapids Bayard        39

Brynn Bass crossed a milestone in her career as a Crusader as Coon Rapids Bayard took on Rolling Valley Conference opponent CAM Anita in a tough match Tuesday night.

The Crusaders came into the contest without one of their starters, Breeley Clayburg, which affected their rebounding potential throughout the game. In the first quarter, it was a close affair between the Crusaders and Cougars as the Cougars were able to escape the quarter with a six-point lead at 17-11. Crusaders Head Coach Kaitlyn McAlister says Miranda McClellen and Jessica Evans did a good job down low of holding off the CAM Anita defense. The Cougar offense started to knock down shots in the second quarter and also amped up the intensity on defense. The Crusaders were left with only seven points as CAM Anita extended their lead by 19 points at 36-18 at halftime.

Coon Rapids Bayard started to play better against the CAM Anita press in the second half. The Crusaders matched the Cougars in points in the third quarter, which didn’t help them get closer to the Cougars lead, extended to 46-28 going into the final eight minutes of the contest. The Crusaders had another close scoring affair in the fourth quarter with the Cougars and after all was said and done, CAM Anita came away with a 56-39 victory after a strong first half performance.

Brynn Bass’ 17-point performance tonight got her past the 1,000-point career mark in her Crusader’s playing career. She also recorded four rebounds and five steals; a team high. Miranda McClellen also had a solid night with eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. The Crusaders will fall to 10-9 overall on the season and 7-6 in the Rolling Valley Conference. Coon Rapids Bayard will round out their week of competition as they travel to take on Rolling Conference opponent Boyer Valley.

East Sac at Pocahontas Area

Pocahontas Area      54

East Sac                     44

East Sac played one of their best games of the year according to Head Coach Jason Phillips against Pocahontas Area Tuesday night.

The Raiders came out in the first quarter with a solid start, while only putting up six points, they limited the Indians to 10 points. The same happened in the second quarter with the Raider’s defense keeping the Indians on edge while their offense kept pace with an 11-point performance. Pocahontas Area escaped the first half with a 25-17 lead. Coach Phillips was happy with the hustle his girls showed against the Indians and thought they passed the ball well to open players and rebounded well against girls that were taller than them.

The Raiders were able to turn things around in their favor in the third quarter as they cut into the Indian’s lead. Carly Fischer and Aleisha Thayer both led the charge defensively with three steals each, allowing their team to perform offensively with 15 points in the quarter. The Indian’s lead was cut down to 36-32 going into the fourth quarter. Pocahontas Area bounced back offensively in the final eight minutes of the contest, putting up their best performance of the night. With 18 points added to their total, the Indians were able to overcome the momentum shift from East Sac to take home the 54-44 victory.

Individually for the Raiders, three players had stellar double-digit point nights, led by Mary Bontrager who put up 14 points along with six rebounds. Fischer and Meredith Brown were the two other East Sac players to score double-digit points, Fischer with 12 points and Brown with 10. Brown led the team with eight rebounds and six assists. The Raiders will fall to 5-14 overall on the season and 1-9 in the Twin Lakes Conference. The Raiders round out their week of competition with a road game against SE Valley on Friday, February 4th. Tyler Brunner will be broadcasting that double header game on Kick 106.7 around 5:50.

Glidden Ralston at Woodbine

Woodbine                 75

Glidden Ralston      38

The Glidden Ralston Wildcats did everything they could to stop the scoring of Woodbine in Tuesday’s contest, but the Tigers were too much for the Wildcats, especially in the second half.

The Wildcats’ defense in the first quarter was unable to stop the Woodbine offense from getting nearly 20 points up on the board. The Tigers came away with a strong start and got up 19-8 after the first quarter. Glidden Ralston was able to turn around their luck in the second quarter with a double-digit scoring quarter and cutting down the productive Woodbine offense. Glidden Ralston put up 11 points while Woodbine held on to their lead of 33-19 at halftime.

Woodbine saw a resurgence of their high scoring offense with a strong second half, giving Glidden Ralston little time to respond. They went off and put up 21 points in the third quarter. The Wildcats had little answers for Woodbine on either side of the court as they saw themselves down 54-27. The Tigers continued to bring the heat with another 21 point quarter in the fourth and while Glidden Ralston put up another 11 points, couldn’t stop the Tigers from scoring. Woodbine rolled to a 75-38 win over Glidden Ralston.

The Wildcats will fall to 8-8 overall on the season and 6-6 in the Rolling Valley Conference. Glidden Ralston will be in non-conference action on Thursday, February 3rd at home against Madrid.
