Kuemper at Spirit Lake

Spirit Lake 68

Kuemper 35

Kuemper’s road trip on Monday night saw them traveling to Spirit Lake to take on the Indians in a non-conference game, where they had some highlights, but ultimately fell.

The Knights got off to a decent start, getting their defense some time to shine while keeping within five points of the 13-8 Indian lead. Spirit Lake picked up the intensity in the second quarter where they put up 22 points and left Kuemper with eight to lead it 35-16 at halftime. The Knights were able to get their offense time to shine in the third quarter as they’d crack through with a double-digit scoring quarter at 12 points and even outscored Spirit Lake 12-10. Despite that, the Indians still held on to their lead at 45-28 going into the fourth quarter. Just like their resurgence in the second quarter, Spirit Lake found ways to spark new life into their offense and score 23 points in the final eight minutes of the game. With their big second and fourth quarter performances, the Indians had four players score double digit points and come away with the 68-35 victory.

Despite the outcome, Aubrey Heuton had a nice scoring night leading the Knights with 11 points. Akuet Malek night included racking up eight points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks. Catherine Mayhall did a bit of everything for the Knights, recording six points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. The Knights will fall to 4-13 overall on the season. Kuemper will travel next to Lewis Central on Friday, January 28th for a major Hawkeye Ten Conference game. Tyler Brunner will travel over to Lewis Central to broadcast that game on 93.7 KKRL around 5:50.

Ogden At Coon Rapids Bayard

Coon Rapids Bayard 64

Ogden 20

Coon Rapids Bayard settled in after a slow start and took control late in the 1st quarter as they rolled to their 8th win of the season. Breeley Clayburg was a force in the middle on defense and the backboards. Brynn Bass was unstoppable on offense in the middle part of the game and Miranda McClellan had one of her best games of the season. Both teams turned the ball over on most of their first-four possessions, but Coon Rapids Bayard settled in while Ogden hurt themselves most of the game with turnovers. The Crusaders led by 5 at the end of the 1st quarter but opened it up to 15 by half. Kaleith Badker kept Ogden close early with 11 points at half, but the Crusaders defense did a nice job against her in the 2nd half, holding her scoreless.

The defense forced 26 turnovers and held Ogden to 33.3% from the field and only sent the Bulldogs to the line five times. They allowed just 4 points in the 2nd half and only 10 points after the 1st quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard scored 28 points in the 3rd quarter. The game was in continuous clock by the end of the 3rd quarter and Coon Rapids Bayard emptied the bench early in the 4th quarter, getting valuable minutes for their younger players.

Brynn Bass finished with a game high 33 points to go with 6 assists and 4 steals. Miranda McClellan nearly had a double-double with 14 points and 8 rebounds to go with 3 steals and 4 assists. Breeley Clayburg added 8 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and 3 blocks.

The win improves the Crusaders to 8-7 overall. They host Exira-EHK (14-0, 10-0) on Tuesday.

Audubon at Riverside

Audubon 58

Riverside 27

The Audubon Wheelers had an explosive second half against Riverside that gave them win number 12 on the season and a top three position in the Western Iowa Conference Monday night.

The Wheelers started off by playing catch up with the Bulldogs in the first quarter. Riverside drained a three pointer to get their scoring started as Audubon climbed back quickly and tied the ball game up at six points and eventually at nine points going into the second quarter. The Wheelers got their offense sparked with a 13-point second quarter as well as their defense, keeping Riverside to a game low five points taking the 22-14 lead at halftime. Aleah Hermansen continued to show why she’s a leader on this team, racking up 29 points in total in this game.

The scoring for Audubon picked up tremendously in the second half as they quickly got out to a 20-point lead at 40-20 going into the fourth quarter. The Wheelers didn’t slow down at all in the final eight minutes, matching their game high third quarter performance with another 18-point performance in the fourth to easily put away Riverside 58-32. One game removed from surpassing 1,000 career points, Jaci Christensen had another double-digit scoring performance, putting up 13 points. The Wheelers improve to 12-4 overall on the season and move up to third in the Western Iowa Conference with a conference record of 8-3.

Audubon has only one more game this week, a tough conference game against Underwood at home on Friday, January 28th.

Ar-We-Va at Ridge View

Ridge View 58

Ar-We-Va 17

The Ar-We-Va Rockets got out to a tough start to their week of competition as early foul trouble got them in a hole against Ridge View on Monday night.

The Raptors got the upperhand over the Rockets in the first half as they’d get up 17-6 after the first half concluded. Despite a big deficit from the beginning, Rockets Head Coach Jeremy Smith says his team came out and looked good defensively and on their press break played a lot more controlled in their offense early. Ridge View was able to extend that lead further going into halftime at 36-10. The Rockets continued to try and keep up with the Raptors, but early foul trouble with Maggie Ragaller and Jamie Hausman made it difficult for the Rockets to keep their two starters in for too long. The Raptors continued their strong offensive night with a 14-point performance in the third quarter, bringing their lead to 50-15. Ridge View finished out the contest with their lowest scoring quarter, but their strong performance from the start gave them the 58-17 win over Ar-We-Va.

Some notable performances from the Rockets include Delancy Schurke who led the team with eight points while also recording three rebounds and one steal. Despite the foul trouble, Ragaller had three points, four rebounds, and two steals. Sammy Hinners led the team with five rebounds. Ar-We-Va’s week of games continues on Tuesday, January 25th when they travel to take on another Rolling Valley Conference opponent, Woodbine.

Grand View Christian at Glidden Ralston

Grand View Christian 54

Glidden Ralston 46

The Glidden Ralston Wildcats controlled the second and third quarters against Grand View Christian, but a dominant fourth quarter from the Thunder gave them the victory Monday night.

The Wildcats started off with a solid first quarter performance, getting 11 points on the board and only trailing the Thunder by three points at 15-12 going into the second quarter. Glidden Ralston Head Coach Cole Corson says the Thunder ran a variety of different defenses including an extended 2-3, some triangle and two, and 1-3-1. Despite the varied looks on defense from Grand View Christian, the Wildcats had a great second quarter that sparked new life into their offense. Glidden Ralston put up 17 points and took over the game at halftime with a 29-26 lead. Paige Klocke and Tiela Janssen were a big reason for the Wildcat’s scoring success, both combining to score 34 of their team’s points in this game, along with 17 combined rebounds.

The variety of defensive looks from the Thunder started to play a part in the second half as the Wildcats were outscored 10-8 in the third quarter, but still held on by one point to lead 37-36 going into the fourth quarter. The Thunder used that slight advantage to catapult them to a massive scoring quarter in the final eight minutes of play. They scored a game high 18 points and never gave Glidden Ralston a chance to respond as they came away with a 54-46 victory. Coach Corson says his team ran out of gas by the end and had a few too many turnovers in this game towards the end. The Wildcats will fall to 5-7 overall on the season.

Glidden Ralston will continue their week of competition with a road game on Tuesday January 25th against Rolling Valley Conference opponent Paton Churdan.

Storm Lake St. Mary’s at East Sac

Storm Lake St. Mary’s 72

East Sac 37

In a battle of Twin Lakes Conference opponents, the East Sac Raiders looked to knock off the second-best team in the conference, Storm Lake St. Mary’s, but the Panthers were too much to handle in Monday night’s contest.

Storm Lake St. Mary’s came out and wasted no time getting their offense off to a hot start, getting up 21-7 after the first quarter concluded. The Raiders’ tough first half concluded with the Panthers putting up another 21 points and leading 42-9 points. Despite a rough start in the first half, the Raiders bounced back with a strong second half. They broke through with a double-digit score in the third quarter with 16 points. Makenna Steiger and Meredith Brown rounded out the game being a strong duo with Steiger scoring a game high 13 points and Brown leading the way with 11 rebounds. Despite not making it many times to the free throw line, the Raiders still were efficient, going five of eight from the line. The Panthers were also able to have their best scoring quarter in the third with 23 points. East Sac in the fourth quarter was able to outscore Storm Lake St. Mary’s 12-7 points, but the big scoring effort from the Panthers was enough to give them the 72-37 lead. The Raiders will fall to 4-11 on the season and 1-6 in the Twin Lakes Conference.

East Sac will look to bounce back on Tuesday, January 25th as they are at home to take on conference opponent Manson NW Webster.
