Wrestling Results Saturday, January 22nd
Girls State Tournament
The Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union formally announced on the second day of the State Girls Wrestling Tournament that Girls Wrestling will be the 11th sport sanctioned by the Union. That was big news for the sport and for the girls wrestling in Coralville the past two days. Four area girls advanced through the opening day with two from Carroll and one from East Sac and South Central Calhoun. Evelyn Kramer of South Central Calhoun had advanced into the quarterfinals on Friday. Saturday didn’t go as well. She lost her quarterfinal match by fall, dropping into the consolation brackets. She fell in her next match by major decision 12-4 to finish her day 0-2. Sienna Argarin of Carroll and Elsie Dirkx of Carroll both fell in their only match of the day, losing their consolation matches by fall. Olivia Villegas was the other local wrestler and she finished the day going 1-1. She won her first match of the day on the consolation side, winning it by major decision 14-6. She would lose her next match by fall to end her tournament run. Area girls went 1-5 on Saturday.

Carroll had an outstanding tournament finishing 4th with 137.5 points. The Tigers had eight of their ten wrestlers place with Jireh Gallegos bringing home the title at 145. Carroll finished 21-13 in matches with 11 wins by fall, 3 by major decision, 5 decision, 1 sudden victory and an victory by injury. Dreylen Schweitzer went 3-1 with all threw wins by fall. He finished 3rd at 106. Ryler Zeigmann finished 5th, going 2-2, with a win by fall and decision at 113. Cael Nelson was 3rd at 120, going 3-1 with wins by fall, decision and major decisions. Levi Dirkx brought home 7th place at 126 with a 2-2 record. He had a win by major decision and decision. Cooper Ludwig was 5th at 132, going 3-2 with wins by sudden victory, fall, and by injury. Carter Drake was 3-1 for 4th place at 138. He went a win by fall and 2 by decision. Jireh Gallegos was the Tigers lone champion, going 3-0 at 145. Gallegos won two of his matches by fall and the other by major decision. Justin Riesberg finished 0-1 at 152 and Colton Wieland was 0-1 at 285. The final wrestler to place for Carroll was Sterling Rodman at 170. He finished 6th with a 2-2 record on Saturday. Both his wins were by fall.
South Central Calhoun finished 10th overall with 93.5 points. It was a tough Saturday for the Titans as they finished 9-13 Saturday with 5 of those wins by fall, 2 by major decision and 2 by major decision. Kevin King, Blake McAlister and Jayden Soard all finished in 2nd place. The Titans had 5 of their 8 wrestlers place. Kevin King went 2-1 at 160 with a win by fall and by decision. Blake McAlister was 2-1 at 170, finishing in 2nd place with both of his wins by fall. Jayden Soard was 2nd at 220. He went 2-1 with wins by major decision and by decision. Case Korleski went 2-3 at 113 with both wins by fall. Korleski finished 6th. Zachary Trott was 8th at 145, going 1-3 with his win by major decision. Brock Nattress went 0-2 while Riley Timmerman and Kolin Folsom both went 0-1.
Audubon finished 17th with 31 points. The Wheelers went 4-7 with 2 wins by fall and 2 by decision. They had two of their 4 wrestlers place. Cooper Nielsen was the top finisher for Audubon. He took 4th at 195, going 2-2 with both wins by fall. Jack Stanerson was 2-3 at 106, finishing 6th. Stanerson won both matches by decision. Keegan Deist and Alex Foran both went 0-1.
East Sac placed Charlie Veit 7th on the individual and 24th as a team with 11 points. The Raiders went 2-3 with both wins coming by fall. Charlie Veit was 2-2 at 132 with both wins by fall. Garret Ortner was 0-1.
