Kuemper picked up a huge win against the Blue Devils, who came in undefeated. They dominated inside and played great perimeter defense holding Martensdale St Mary’s 22 points below their season average. The Knights grabbed the lead for good on a Michael Kasperbauer layup in the 3rd quarter, putting them ahead 28-27. The game was tight at half with Kuemper down 27-26, but their defense was dominant in the 3rd quarter, holding the Blue Devils to 3 points. They took charge in the 3rd quarter, outscoring them 15-3. An 8-0 run by Kuemper put them ahead in the 3rd as DJ Vonnahme followed Kasperbauer with a bucket, Kasperbauer again got to the rim and Vonnahme scored inside giving Kuemper a 34-27 lead. After a Blue Devils bucket, Carson Kanne scored and then assisted on a bucket by Isaac Evans and you could sense Kuemper was in complete control. Kanne found Carter Putney in the corner for a three and the lead was 41-30 heading into the 4th quarter.
Kuemper looked good on offense, especially when they worked the ball inside first. They opened the game, getting the ball inside with DJ Vonnahme, Evan Adams and Dawson Gifford scoring at the rim. They built an early 9-2 lead. A timeout settled Martensdale St Mary’s down and they got aggressive on the boards, clawing their way back, tying the game at 9. Isaac Evans took over for Kuemper as the Knights answered the Blue Devil run. Michael Pottebaum found Isaac Evans to put Kuemper up 18-13 after the 1st quarter. The Blue Devils started the 2nd quarter with a 5-0 run, tying the game at 18. Carson Kanne connected with Nate Overmohle for a three and Kuemper was up 21-18. Hogan Franey gave Martensdale St Mary’s their first lead at 22-20. The game went back and forth with six of the next seven baskets changing the lead. Michael Kasperbauer opened the 3rd with a layup and Kuemper never trailed again.
The Knights allowed 17 points in the 2nd half, after giving up 27 in the 1st half. Their perimeter defense was outstanding all day as Martensdale St Mary’s connected on 3-24 from three and shot just 36% from the field. Kuemper connected on 42.6% from the field. They did struggle from beyond the arc, hitting 5-22. Kuemper won the rebounding battle 35-29.
Isaac Evans led Kuemper with 13 points, DJ Vonnahme added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Dawson Gifford finished with 9 points and 5 assists. Carson Kanne also had 5 assists.
The win improves Kuemper to 9-8. They play at Lewis Central on Friday.

Carroll feels like they let one slip away, but can still be happy with the growth this team continues to show as they fell in overtime to Dallas Center Grimes, who is ranked 2nd in the State. The Tigers led most of the game, including hagving a 41-36 lead in the 4th quarter. Dallas Center Grimes went on a 7-0 run, taking a 2 point lead, but more importantly, giving themselves a chance to win. Caden Kock put Carroll up to start the overtime 47-45 but Bo Huston hit his only three, putting the Mustangs up 48-47. Carroll held Dallas Center Grimes 14 points below their season average, even with it going to overtime. Their perimeter defense with Kaleb Booth, Nick Macke, Ethan Lengeling, Caden Kock and Evan Hammer at the rim held a good shooting team to six-threes until the overtime. The Mustangs hit two big ones in OT. Cole Glasgow hit the second one, putting Dallas Center Grimes up 51-49 in overtime. Evan Hammer hit a free throw to cut it to one but Carroll couldn’t get the lead back. The Mustangs led 53-50 with under 30 seconds left. Carroll got a good look for Kaleb Bo0th on the left side, but the game tying shot fell off the front of the rim after sitting there for a moment. Carroll had two more chances in the closing seconds after Dallas Center Grimes missed the front end of one and ones twice but couldn’t score.
The lead changed six times to open the game with Kaleb Booth finding Ethan Lengeling for a three, putting Carroll up 10-8. Evan Hammer scored first for Carroll. Nick Macke added a pair of free throws before Booth and Lengling hit back-to-back threes. The game was tied at 14 heading into the 2nd quarter. It remained tight with Carroll eventually going up 26-19 on a bucket by Kaleb Booth. Dallas Center Grimes made a run to close the half down, 29-26. An Ethan Lengeling assist to Kaleb Booth kept the Tigers in front.
Dallas Center Grimes tied the game early in the 3rd, but both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm. The Mustangs outscored Carroll 8-6 in the quarter, but Carroll led by one heading into the 4th. Caden Kock had a pair of free throws and Evan Hammer had a bucket and free throw to start the Tigers 4th quarter. A Kaleb Booth bucket made it 41-36. Cole Glasgow and Jacob Ruynan took over for Dallas Center Grimes and Runyan put them up 43-41. Carroll answered with an Ethan Lengeling three point play and led 45-43. DC-G picked up a pair of free throws and had to chance to win it at the end of regulation. They held the ball for the final 1:18 and missed a shot at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.
Caden Kock paced Carroll with 13 points to go with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Kaleb Booth had 12 point, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Evan Hammer contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds. Ethan Lengeling finished with 7 points.
The loss drops Carroll to 7-5 on the season. They host Winterset on Tuesday.
