Kuemper took on the tall task of taking on the number one team in class 4A, Glenwood, Thursday night in a valiant, but losing effort.
Glenwood started off the contest in a big way with an 18-0 first quarter playing by their strengths, athleticism and strength, according to Kuemper Head Coach Tyler Tryon. Kuemper did a much better job playing with Glenwood in the second quarter, putting up 13 points and only being outscored by four points at 17-13. The Rams extended their lead to 35-13 at halftime. The Knights kept playing to the best of their abilities in the third quarter, while only scoring five points, they kept Glenwood to a game low 11 points. The Rams took a 46-18 lead into the final eight minutes of play. Up until the very end, Kuemper’s speed and determination kept them in the game into the fourth quarter as they’d bank in 10 points and only be outscored by four points. Glenwood, ultimately, came away with the win 60-28. Coach Tryon says the Knights got some good looks early but missed shots that led to run outs and layups, but he was happy with their determination throughout the entire game. Catherine Mayhall was the lone Knight who scored in double digits with 11 points on the night. Her, Akuet Malek, and Frannie Glynn all had six rebounds on the night and Malek had a team high six blocks as well.
The Knights will have four days away from competition as they return on Tuesday, January 18th to take on Clarinda on the road.

Coon Rapids Bayard at Woodward Granger

Coon Rapids Bayard had a defensively strong game against Woodward Granger where Brynn Bass and Breeley Clayburg were a dynamic duo on both sides of the ball.
Both the Crusaders and Hawks started off with a slow first quarter scoring, but the Crusaders were able to hold the advantage at 9-5 after the quarter ended. The biggest scoring quarter for Coon Rapids Bayard was in the next quarter where they dropped 18 points and kept Woodward Granger to nine points. The difference maker for the Crusaders in this game was their rebounding potential, led by Clayburg who ended the night with a 12 point, 10 rebound double double. Miranda McClellan and Laydia Hofbauer also rebounded well and both had five points in this game. The Crusaders led 27-14 going into the second half.
Coon Rapids Bayard didn’t slow down a bit in the third quarter, continuing to score well while taking a slight step back defensively as they allowed the Hawks to score in double digits for the first time all night. Despite that, the Crusaders still looked as good as they had all night and led 41-24 going into the fourth. The Hawks managed a slight run in the final two minutes of play, going 8-1 scoring and cutting down the Coon Rapids Bayard lead to 10 points. The Crusaders were resilient and stayed the course en-route to a 53-39 win. Crusaders Head Coach Kaitlyn McAlister says her team was phenomenal again defensively, were able to take away drives and forced the Hawks to take outside shots they didn’t want to take. The Crusaders improve to 6-4 overall on the season.
Coon Rapids Bayard’s road game against Paton Churdan on Friday, January 14th has been postponed to Tuesday, February 8th. The Crusader’s next contest will be a good challenge as they take on Earlham on Monday, January 17th at home.

Ar-We-Va managed to get three players in double digit points for scoring against LoMa, but were unable to pull away for the win Thursday night.
The Rockets didn’t get off to the start they were looking for, meanwhile the Panthers flourished in the first half. Ar-We-Va struggled to keep up with LoMa as the Panthers got up 32-5 going into halftime. But the Rockets made up for their slow first half with a phenomenal third quarter performance. Ar-We-Va had one of the biggest momentum shifts of the year, going from a mere five points in the first half, to 23 in the third alone. While LoMa still led 44-28, the Rockets showed they could still hang with the Panthers. LoMa was quickly able to readjust to the Rockets big third quarter to outperform them 19-5 and took home the 63-36 victory.
Individually for the Rockets, Jamie Hausman, Timberlen Koch, and Maggie Ragaller all scored double digit points in this game; Hausman had 10, Ragaller with 11, and Koch led the team with 13. Ragaller also led the team with three steals on the night. Ar-We-Va’s home game against CAM-Anita on Friday, January 14th has been postponed to Tuesday, February 8th. Their next contest will see them at home against Exira-EHK on Tuesday, January 18th.

East Sac had some bright spots in their game against Cherokee Washington, but they ultimately fell to the Braves Thursday night.
Cherokee Washington had the advantage over East Sac in the first quarter as they got out to a 17-3 lead going into the second quarter. The Raiders had some better success with a 10-point performance in the second quarter, but the Braves had their best quarter of the game with 25 points to extend their lead to 42-13. Mary Bontrager and Meredith Brown were working in tandem in this game, Bontrager focused on scoring and had 16 points in total, and Brown on rebounds as she grabbed 12 boards.
The Raiders changed the momentum a bit in the third quarter as they slowed down the Braves’ scoring down to 10 points as East Sac grabbed seven points. Cherokee Washington still held on to their stead lead at 52-20. The Raider’s final eight minutes saw them outperform the Braves 18-13 in their best scoring quarter of the game. Despite their late game efforts, the Raiders ultimately fell to Cherokee Washington by a final score of 65-38.
East Sac’s game against Storm Lake St. Mary’s on Friday, January 14th has been postponed to Monday, January 24th. The Raiders will return from a four-day break from action with a home game against West Bend Mallard on Tuesday, January 18th.
