Kuemper evened their record at 6-6, holding on to beat East Sac who fell to 3-7 on Saturday night. The game had three lead changes and two ties but was tight the whole way with Kuemper grabbing their largest lead at 8 in the 1st half and East Sac leading twice with their largest lead of 3. Dawson Gifford hit a pair of free throws to put Kuemper ahead 30-29 in the 3rd quarter, moments after Aden Vondrak hit one of his five-threes to put East Sac up 29-26. Evan Adams, who was huge on the boards for Kuemper cut the Raiders lead to one with an offensive rebound and put back. Patrick Hensel took over from there, hitting back-to-back threes to extend Kuemper lead to 39-32. Aden Vondrak tried to keep East Sac close hitting another three, cutting the Kuemper lead to 49-45. Dawson Gifford extended the Kuemper lead back to three, but Luke Wright scored inside on back-to-back possessions making it 52-49 Kuemper. The Knights were able to run enough clock and got a pair of free throws from DJ Vonnahme to hold on for the win.
Luke Wright scored to open the game for East Sac, but DJ Vonnahme answered for Kuemper with a bucket and free throw and Kuemper built a 15-7 lead on buckets from Isaac Evans, Carter Putney, Michael Kasperbauer and Carson Kanne. Aden Vondrak kept East Sac close as the Knights got a great defensive effort on Tyler Schmitt, limiting his touches in the 1st half. Kuemper took advantage at the free throw line hitting 9 of 12 for the game while East Sac struggled making just 10 of 20. The Knights lead was 24-21 at half. East Sac started the 2nd half on an 8-2 run but couldn’t maintain the lead.
Patrick Hensel led Kuemper off the bench with 11 points, DJ Vonnahme finished with 9 points, Dawson Gifford, Isaac Evans and Carter Putney each finished with 8 points and Evan Adams pulled down a team high 13 rebounds. Isaac Evans nearly had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Carson Kanne paced Kuemper with 5 assists.
Aden Vondrak knocked down 5-3’s on his way to a game high 20 points along with 8 assists and 3 steals. Luke Wright added 14 points and Tyler Schmitt finished with another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Knights will host Des Moines Christian on Monday while East Sac is off until Thursday when they travel to Cherokee.
