Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: East Sac Girls Hits 10 3’s in Win over Kuemper on Saturday

East Sac shot the ball well from three all night getting contributions from Mary Bontrager, Makenna Steiger and Jen Aschinger as they top Kuemper on Saturday night. The Raiders shot 47.6% from beyond the arc, hitting 10-21 from deep. Kuemper finished with seven-threes but struggled to consistently hit from beyond the arc.

Kaytlyn Sagert came out aggressive, scoring the first basket of the game and putting East Sac up 4-2 after a bucket from Aubrey Hueton tied the game at 2. Mary Bontrager found Carly Fischer for a three and then took a pass from Sagert for her own three as East Sac built an early 10-2 lead. Catherine Mayhall and Hueton pulled Kuemper within 2 with back-to-back threes but that was as close as Kuemper got. Jen Aschinger energized the Raiders with the first of her three-threes, putting East up 15-8. Mary Bontrager followed that with a bucket and then the second of her three-threes and East Sac was back up 8. The Raiders led 20-10 after the 1st quarter.

Aleisha Thayer found Jen Aschinger for a Raider bucket to start the 2nd quarter and Bontrager drained another three and East Sac was up 15. Kuemper chipped away and Kora Thomsen hit a three, making it 25-15. Catherine Mayhall made it 26-18 late in the 1st half but Kaytlyn Sagert scored to end the half with East Sac up 28-18.

Kuemper pulled within 7 in the 3rd quarter but the hot shooting Raiders answered. Makenna Steiger drained one of her three-threes, Kaytlyn Sagert hit a three and Steiger took pass from Jen Aschinger for a three and East Sac opened up a 42-29 lead. Aschinger drained a three late in the 3rd and East Sac was up 47-31.

The lead grew to 22 in the 4th quarter with the Raiders up 60-38. Kuemper kept chipping away and Catherine Mayhall knocked down a couple threes as Kuemper pulled within 13 with around a minute left.

Mary Bontrager had a game high 17 points for East Sac. She added 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Kaytlyn Sagert and Jen Aschinger each had 10 points. Sagert added 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Carly Fischer scored 9 points with 6 rebounds and Makenna Steiger added 9 points. Meredith Brown finished with 10 rebounds and 8 assists.

Catherine Mayhall paced Kuemper with 16 points and 4 steals. Kora Thomsen shot the ball well, finishing with 14 points. Akuet Malek added 7 points and 8 rebounds.

The win improves East Sac to 3-7 on the season as they head to Cherokee on Thursday. Kuemper falls to 3-9 and will host Des Moines Christian on Monday.
