Ar-We-Va 40

The Audubon Wheelers pulled out some late game momentum as they were able to grab a 10-point victory over the Ar-We-Va Rockets on Thursday night.

The Rockets in the early parts of the contest looked to be the better team as they grabbed the 14-9 lead after the first quarter. Audubon Head Coach Coleman Mullenix says the Rockets made it hard to defend them and had constant action and good screens that gave the Wheelers a good challenge. The Rockets were in control for a large portion of the second quarter, getting up 23-13 at one point. The Wheelers, though, got on a lengthy 14-2 run that allowed them to stop Ar-We-Va’s offense in their tracks and allowed them to take the 27-25 lead at halftime. A big reason why Audubon was able to come back in this game was Gavin Smith who put up a big 20-point game against the Rockets.

Audubon’s run from the second quarter extended into the third quarter where they kept Ar-We-Va at 25 points while they extended their lead up to 33-25. The Rockets then had a turn of momentum go their way as they then went on a run that cut down the Audubon lead to 36-32 going into the final quarter of the game. The Rockets had Audubon within four points of taking the lead at 38-34. Ar-We-Va Emmett Neumann was a big help in the scoring department, banking in 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds as well in this game. But the Wheelers came back alive and started to stretch out their lead once more in the later parts of the fourth quarter. After having their lead cut down to four points, Audubon was able to get up by seven and eventually pull out the 10-point victory over Ar-We-Va 50-40.

The Wheelers will improve to 4-5 overall on the season as Ar-We-Va falls to 2-7. The Wheelers close out their week of action with a road game against IKM-Manning on Friday, January 7th. The Rockets are also in action on Friday as they play host to Boyer Valley.

Tri-Center at IKM-Manning

The IKM-Manning Wolves had an exhausting, but entertaining game against Tri-Center Thursday night that featured a plethora of ties and lead changes late.

The Wolves got their night started with a strong 4-0 run in the first minute of the game, broken up by a bucket by Tri-Center. With the momentum on their side, Amos Rasmussen and Ross Kusel both drained three pointers and gave the Wolves a 17-9 lead going into the second quarter. The Tri-Center offense started to show it’s strength as the Trojans spread out the floor and passed the ball a lot, opening the door for open shots from behind the arc and inside looks near the baseline. IKM-Manning at one point led by 10 points to start the second quarter, but Tri-Center’s passing allowed them to cut down that lead to five points as the Wolves held on to their lead at 27-22 at halftime.

The back-and-forth nature of this game started in the third quarter where Tri-Center grabbed their first lead of the game as IKM-Manning tried to stay ahead. Rasmussen had two points total in the third quarter while Conner Halbur led the team in that quarter with four points but was able to tie the game with one of his buckets. The Wolves were trying to utilize bounce passes which, more times than not, were taken away by Tri-Center and turned into points off the break. Tri-Center escaped the third quarter with the one point 34-33 lead going into the final eight minutes of the game. IKM-Manning and Tri-Center took turns taking the lead, losing the lead, and tying the game throughout the fourth quarter, Tri-Center’s three-point game came alive as they made three threes in that quarter alone. The Trojans continued to stretch the court on offense and got traps near the baseline and corners on IKM-Manning, which gave them chances to shoot free throws plenty. Tri-Center went 11 of 12 from the free throw, which allowed them to get up by as many as eight points in the final moments of the game, giving them the 54-46 victory over the Wolves.

Individually for IKM-Manning, Amos Rasmussen looked solid as he recorded a team high 14 points. Conner Halbur had an overall solid night with 12 points, seven rebounds, and a steal. While Luke Ramsey didn’t score any points, he was essential in the IKM-Manning offense recording six rebounds and six assists. The Wolves will fall to 2-7 overall on the season and 1-6 in the Western Iowa Conference. IKM-Manning’s final game of the week will see them at home against Western Iowa Conference foe Audubon on Friday, January 7th.
