Kuemper At Denison Schleswig

Denison Schleswig 60

Kuemper 55

Kuemper had an opportunity to tie up their game against Denison Schleswig with 1.8 seconds remaining, but they were unable to pull out the game tying bucket to bring the game into overtime Tuesday night.

The Knights and Monarchs had a few moments where one team was out in front by a wide margin. Kuemper’s Carter Putney got the scoring started when he drained a three pointer and gave the Knights a 10-8 lead going into the second quarter. Denison-Schleswig got on a roll when they made Kuemper commit fouls which gave the Monarchs plenty of trips to the free throw line. The Monarchs went five of six from the free throw line and stepped up their defensive pressure to give them the 22-18 lead late in the second quarter. Kuemper was only able to put up eight points with Dawson Gifford draining both his free throws, and DJ Vonnahme, Nate Overmohle, Evan Adams all got a bucket from the field.

The second half was more competitive than the first half with plenty of lead changes and ties to boot. Michael Kasperbauer’s second half performance kept Kuemper close enough with Denison Schleswig to tie the game multiple times. Kasperbauer led the team with seven points in the third quarter and while the Knights scored a lot better to start the half and even outscored the Monarchs 16-15, Kuemper still found themselves down by three points at 37-34 going into the fourth quarter. Both teams saved their best performances for the last quarter. Kasperbauer’s three pointer in the quarter gave the Knights the lead late, but Denison Schleswig continued to play catch up and force fouls to get to the free throw line. The Monarchs found more success from the free throw line in the final quarter, going seven of 10 which kept them in the game. Kuemper eventually got down by three points with 1.8 second remaining and were unable to successfully inbound the ball, giving Denison Schleswig the opportunity to close out the game and make two final free throws with 0.5 second left to win it 60-55.

The Knights fall to 4-6 overall on the season and 3-3 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. Their week back from the holiday break continues with a home game against Atlantic on Friday, January 7th.
