Bishop Heelan at Kuemper

Bishop Heelan 66

Kuemper 62

In a battle of lead changes and ties, Kuemper tried to extend their win streak to four games as they took on Bishop Heelan in an entertaining game that went the way of the Crusaders.

Kuemper started off the contest with a quick lead in the first quarter that was soon matched by Bishop Heelan multiple times. In the final 20 seconds of the quarter, three lead changes occurred that led to Kuemper and Bishop Heelan escaping with a 14 all tie. While the game was just as competitive and close in the second quarter, the Knights started to break down the Crusader defense and score some much needed points. Dawson Gifford, Carson Kanne, and Michael Pottebaum all hit big time three pointers that gave Kuemper some good momentum and allowed them to get up 32-28 at halftime. Gifford led the team in the first half with 12 points.

Bishop Heelan picked up momentum to start off the second half as they started to cause turnovers and break away with strong attacks to the basket. The Crusaders came away in the third quarter with three big three pointers themselves, two of which came from Matt Noll. The Crusaders outscored the Knights 17-10 and grabbed their largest lead of the game at 45-42. Kuemper struggled to keep up with the speediness of Bishop Heelan in that quarter, and had five guys score a single bucket, coming up with only 10 points. In the fourth quarter, both teams had their biggest quarter where they’d score 20 or more points each. Bishop Heelan continued to attack the basket well and Kuemper started to gain some momentum late in the final eight minutes of play.

The biggest advantage the Crusaders had over the Knights were the free throws. In the fourth quarter alone, Bishop Heelan went nine of ten while Kuemper went four of six. Those free throws kept the Crusaders out in front for a majority of the quarter, while Michael Kasperbauer kept the Knights behind by five points with some clutch three pointers. Ultimately, a pair of free throws was the final nail in the coffin as the Crusaders came back, took the lead, and won 66-62 over Kuemper.

Individually for the Knights, Dawson Gifford had a game high 19 points along with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Carson Kanne in his first varsity start of the season had 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Isaac Evans also had a strong night with seven points, seven rebounds, a steal, and two blocks. The Knights will fall to 3-5 overall on the season.

Just before the holiday break, the Knights will round out the first half of the season with a home game against St. Albert on Tuesday, December 21st. Jeff Blankman will have that broadcast on 93.7 KKRL Tuesday night starting around 5:50.
