Kuemper fell just short of taking set one and gave up a 4-0 and 3-0 run in set two as they fell to Denver in three sets on Wednesday in Webster City. The Knights hung tough in the first two sets but missed a few serves in key situations and were out of system enough to send over too many free balls that Denver took advantage of. The match had nineteen ties and nine lead changes with Kuemper leading in all three sets. Kuemper swung very well in set one with a .378 kill efficiency but saw that drop to .171 in the second set and .091 to the third set. The loss ended the Knights season at 26-11.
The first set was extremely tight all the way through with both teams holding a 3-point lead at different points of the match. Denver started fast and led 4-1 before Kuemper settled in and took their first led at 8-7. Kaci Peter finished with 9 kills, with her first coming early in the set to cut the Denver lead to 4-2. Kenzie Schon got rolling a few minutes later with back-to-back kills and Kuemper was on top 9-7. Kuemper twice went ahead by 3 at 10-7 and 12-9 but Denver responded with a 5-0 run led by Kayla Knowles at the net. Her kill put them ahead 14-12. Kuemper hung close, trailing by 1 to 2 points before Kaci Peter went back to serve. She had an ace serve to give Kuemper a 17-16 lead. The Cyclones responded again and went ahead 18-17. The teams traded leads with Kuemper leading 20-19 and Denver going back on top 21-20. Kuemper tied the set at 21, 22, 23 and 24 but never led again. A four hit call against the Knights ended the first set 26-24.
Kuemper took their only lead in set two at 3-2 on a 3-0 run but Denver responded with their own 3-0 run. Kuemper stayed close and trailed 6-5 but Denver got on a roll, extending the lead to 10-5. A Kuemper timeout slowed the momentum momentarily as Kuemper crept within 3 but Denver grabbed their biggest lead in set two, up 17-10. Kuemper used their second timeout and scored 3 of the next four points. The closest they got the rest of the set was down 23-20. Denver went up 2-0 with a 25-21 win.
Kuemper gave up the first two points of set three but battled back to lead 3-2. Denver tied the set at 3 and 4 and took the lead back at 5-4. Kuemper hung tough for a bit, trailing 8-7 but the Cyclones pulled away with a 10-1 run. Kuemper got within 7 twice after that but fell by 11 to finish the match.
Kenzie Schon finished with a team high 13 kills, Kaci Peter added 9 kills and Kamryn Venner added 7 kills. Ashlyn Badding finished with 32 assists with 17 of those in set 1. Kenya Prescott had a team high 10 digs with Avarie Pedelty and Kenzie Schon each finishing with 4 digs. Sophie Badding had 5 of the teams 7 blocks.
Denver earns the 5 seed at State and will play Boyden Hull on Tuesday at 4:00 on court one in the quarterfinals. They improved to 36-7.
