Kuemper 7
Kuemper hung tough with the 2nd ranked Eagles into the 2nd half before Underwood took control of the game, sending Kuemper to their 2nd straight loss and dropping them to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in the district. Kuemper had a couple of chances early in the game to take a lead but just missed a couple passes over the middle that had a chance to turn into points. That allowed Underwood to build a quick 14-0 lead and hold a 21-7 advantage at half.
Kuemper opened the game with a three and out that included a pass over the deep middle that was open but not completed forcing a punt. The Eagles behind the running of Joey Anderson marched down the field and scored on a short Anderson run. Kuemper’s next possession was hurt by a couple penalties, backing them inside their own 10-yard line. They were forced to punt and the Eagle got pressure, blocking the punt and falling on it at the Knights 1-yard line. Anderson scored from a yard out the next play and Underwood was up 14-0 with 8:13 left in the first quarter.
Kuemper responded with a nice drive, finding some success with the passing game. They moved the ball into Eagle territory but turned it over on downs. Will Simons fell on the fumble at the Knights 28-yard line and the defense held firm. The Knights again found success through the air and marched the ball to the Eagle 24 but turned it over on downs. Underwood took advantage, scoring nine plays later when Colin Brant caught a screen pass and weaved his way through the Knights defense for a 31-yard touchdown. The Knights were down 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter. The offense moved the ball again but punted it away and Underwood began to drive again. Evan Adams fell on the second Eagle fumble and the Knights were in business at the Eagle 47-yard line. DJ Vonnahme found Trevor Rial for a big pass to the Eagle 5-yard line and then found Rial in the end zone for a touchdown. Kuemper trailed 21-7 at the half but had nearly as many offensive yards as the Eagles and had been having success moving the ball.
The Eagles fumbled on the first play of the 3rd quarter and Trevor Rial pounced on it. The Knights had the ball on the Eagle 40-yard line with a chance. They weren’t able to pick up a first down and had to punt the ball back to Underwood. The Eagle offense got going again with Joey Anderson in the ground game. He finished with 25 carries for 238 yards before leaving with cramps late in the game. The Eagles scored on a 33-yard Anderson run and led 28-7 with 7:23 left in the 3rd quarter. After another Kuemper punt the Eagles scored on a 42-yard pass to Chase Ryan, making it 35-7. The Knights punted on their four possessions of the 2nd half while Underwood scored on three straight after the turnover to open the half.
