Football Recaps and Stats from Friday, October 1st

Bishop Heelan At Carroll

Carroll 23

Heelan 22

What a finish by Carroll as the Tigers fell behind by six with 1:20 left in the game and scored 0:35 later to win it. Ethan Lengeling found Gus Collison who found the sideline and out ran everyone down the field to score. Elijah Lee kicked the extra point and the Tigers then relied on their defense to make a stop. Head Coach Craig Rowedder says the play wasn’t designed to go to Collison but Lengeling found him open. Rowedder says they hoped Collison could get out of bounds to save some clock but were happy he was able to score. The win keeps Carroll’s playoff  hopes alive.

The game didn’t start well for Carroll as they were forced to punt on their opening drive. A special teams miscue gave Heelan the ball at the Tigers 22-yard line and they took advantage, scoring on a 19-yard pass on 3rd down. Carroll responded and dominated the rest of the first half. The Tigers offense came back out, establishing the ground game and the short pass game and marched down the field. Cooper Ludwig scored on an 11-yard run on the 14th play of a drive that started at the Carroll 15-yard line and the deficit was cut to 7-6.

Remy Ricahrdson setup Carroll’s next touchdown. Richardson intercepted Quinn Olson late in the 2nd quarter. Ethan Lengeling found Zach Dirkx on a fly pattern down the left sideline and hit him in stride, scoring from 58-yards and Carroll went ahead 13-6. Tanner Pontow came up with a big sack on a 4th down with 0:16 left in the half and Carroll took over at the Heelan 26-yard line. They closed the half 29-yard field goal from Elijah Lee and led 16-7 at half.

The 2nd half started worse than the first half for Carroll. A low snap on the first play of the half bounced off Ethan Lengeling shin and Heelan fell on it at the Tigers 17-yard line. Heelan scored when Sir Brandon Watts scored on a 17-yard run a play later. Carroll turned it over on downs on their next possession and Heelan marched down the field but missed a 33-yard field goal. A Tiger punt gave the ball back to the Heelan offense which had found a rhythm on the ground. They moved into field goal range again, this time Tanner Pontow got through the line of scrimmage and blocked the kick. Carroll tried to return the kick but were tackled on their own 10-yard line and were forced to punt again. Nolan Mohr punted the Tigers out of trouble for the moment. Heelan started the drive at their own 28-yard line, but moved the ball down field and scored 7 plays later on another Watts run. This time from 13-yards. Heelan went for two and got it to lead 22-16 with 1:20 left in the game.

Carroll looked in trouble when they threw a pair of incompletes on the first two plays after a good kick return by Zach Dirkx gave them the ball on their own 41-yard line. Ethan Lengeling scrambled on 3rd down and got out of bounds to stop the clock but only gained a yard. Carroll faced a 4th and 9 from their own 42-yard line. Coach Craig Rowedder says they had a route they liked and drew up the play. They were hoping to get Cooper Ludwig and pick up a first down out of the backfield but Heelan jumped that route leaving Collison open coming across the field. Lengeling found him and Collison got the corner and turned it up down the sidelines, scoring the game tying touchdown with 0:45 left. Elijah Lee booted the extra point and Carroll led 23-22. Cooper Ludwig nearly made a great diving interception on a tipped ball on the Heelan possession but it fell to the ground. The Crusaders tried a hook and ladder and ended up fumbling the ball and Remy Richardson fell on it to seal the win for Carroll.

The Tiger defense gave up 76-yards passing and 240-yards rushing. They created two turnovers, one turned into points and the other allowed Carroll to run out the clock. Carroll passed for 213-yards with 116 of those coming on two touchdown passes. They carried the ball 38 times for 99-yards, with  Cooper Ludwig picking up 90 of those. Carroll only turnover came on downs.

Ethan Lengeling threw for 213-yards and a pair of touchdowns. Cooper Ludwig ran it 24 times for 90-yards and a touchdown. Zach Dirkx caught 5 passes for 119-yards and a touchdown, Gus Collison had 1 catch for 58-yards and a touchdown and Nick Macke caught 3 passes for 28-yards. Payton Wardell led the Tigers with 8 tackles, 7 of those solo. Gus Collison added 7 tackles and Tanner Pontow had 5.5 tackles and a huge sack before half. Remy Richardson had a fumble recovery and an interception.

The win improves Carroll to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in district play. They travel to MOC Floyd Valley on Friday. The Dutchmen are 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district play. They lost 39-14 to Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Friday.

Kuemper at East Sac

Kuemper 20

East Sac 19

Kuemper punched their ticket to the playoffs as they narrowly got past East Sac Friday night.

All game long both teams were doing their best to one up each other, but it all started with East Sac. The Raiders got on the board thanks to a pick six from Brody Boeckman who ran it 21-yard for the pick six, giving them the 6-0 lead. That play stood as the long score of the first quarter. In the second quarter, it was Cooper Pottebaum who capped off a long Kuemper drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak, and thanks to the good PAT, the Knights were on top 7-6. A little more than a minute after the Knights score, East Sac responded with a long scoring drive that was completed with a 57-yard touchdown run from Tyler Schmitt to give the Raiders the 12-7 lead with 6:52 left in the quarter. The lead once again fell into the hands of Kuemper as Ben Gerken grabbed a 24-yard pass from Pottebaum to give the Knights the lead at 14-12. That score stood when halftime rolled around, with the Knights leading not only in points, but slightly in the yards department. Kuemper recorded 155 yards of offense, slightly better than East Sac’s 149.

In the third quarter, both teams collided and didn’t find much success scoring, leaving the lead in Kuemper’s corner. In the fourth quarter, with 6:28 left to play, Aiden Vondrak was able to grab his first touchdown of the game and give the Raiders the lead at 19-14. Ultimately, it was Kuemper who had the last laugh as Jake Irlbeck caught his first touchdown pass of the season, giving Kuepmer the 20-19 lead with 21 seconds left. East Sac was unable to end their final offensive drive with points, leading Kuemper to come up with the close 20-19 victory and solidify their spot in the playoffs.

Kuemper’s next challenge will be against (4-1) Treynor at home on their senior night. East Sac will get (0-5) MVAO-COU in week seven on the road.

South Hamilton At South Central Calhoun

South Central Calhoun 18

South Hamilton 14

South Central Calhoun expected a tough game and got it from South Hamilton. The Titans defense made a stop late to preserve the win. The Titans were outgained 266-249 and the Hawks held a nearly 3-1 advantage in time of possession. The Titans had success running and passing the ball but South Hamilton kept the Titan offense off the field with a nearly seven minute drive and an eight minute drive in the 1st half. The Hawks added a six minute drive in the 3rd quarter.

South Hamilton punted on their opening drive and South Central Calhoun scored on a 35-yard pass from Gavin Batta to put the Titans ahead 6-0. South Hamilton answered with a long sustained drive and scored with 1:25 left in the half to lead 8-6. Kevin King returned the ensuing kick, giving the Titans good field position and they took advantage, scoring on a 30-yard run by  Blake McAlister. South Central Calhoun missed both their two point conversions in the game and an extra point but led 12-8 at half.

The Titans started the 2nd half with the ball and stretched the lead when Gavin Batta snuck in from a yard out to put them ahead 18-8. South Hamilton scored late in the 3rd quarter and trailed 18-14 heading to the 4th quarter. The Hawks were driving late and got inside the Titans 15-yard line but back to back offensive penalties gave them a 3rd and nearly 40. The Titans defense made the stop and they were able to run out the clock.

Blake McAlister had another big night with 105-yards rushing and 53-yards receiving with a touchdown catch and on the ground. Gavin Batta only passed it nine times but had 74-yards and a touchdown. LoMa At IKM-Manning

LoMa 29

IKM-Manning 19

A tough opening half took away the Wolves chances to finish 2nd in the district as LoMa scored 29 points and led 29-6 at the half. Turnovers and penalties hurt the Wolves in the 1st half, helping set up the Panthers with short fields. IKM-Manning missed a few tackles in the opening half and weren’t gap solid, leading to a few big plays.  IKM-Manning played much better, dominating the 2nd half and gave themselves a chance, shutting down the Panthers. They hit on a few passes and were driving in the 4th quarter with a chance to make it a one possession game but the drive stalled and the Panthers held on.

LoMa scored twice in the 1st quarter and 2nd quarter, using their run game to build a big lead. Gavin McGuire finished with 247-yards, averaging 8-yards per rush attempt. Dylan Oviatt added their other rushing touchdown, running for 62-yards on five carries. The Panthers defense set up several scores with 3 interceptions.

IKM-Manning scored late in the 2nd quarter to make it 22-6, but a short kickoff allowed the Panthers to score just before half and take the momentum into half. Head Coach Cory McCarville says it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if it was 22-6 at half with the way the Wolves came out and played with more energy in the 2nd half.

The Wolves had some success passing the ball in the 2nd half and established the run game with Amos Rasmussen and Trey Jassa both scoring. Rasmussen finished with 127-yards, Cooper Irlmeir added 29-yards as IKM-Manning had 157-yards rushing and 100-yards passing. Irlmeier added 12 tackles with 8 solo to lead the defense. Audubon 63

Coon Rapids Bayard 23

Audubon continued to roll in week six as they picked up a dominant win over Coon Rapids Bayard Friday night.

The first quarter was a back and forth battle between the Wheeler and Crusaders, with Audubon striking first. Gavin Smith found the endzone off a one-yard quarterback keeper to give the Wheelers the 7-0 lead with 7:41 left in the quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard started off the second quarter with another touchdown and two point conversion to take back the lead at 16-14. After that Crusader score, the Wheelers took over the game, starting with another quarterback keeper from Smith to give the Wheelers the lead back at 20-16. After a 43-yard touchdown run from Smith and another touchdown pass to Wessel, the Wheelers rolled to a 35-16 lead going into halftime.

It was all Wheelers in the third quarter as they started off the second half with another Smith keeper in their opening drive to get up 41-16. Ar-We-Va 33

Boyer Valley 30

Ar-We-Va had a tough non-district match against Boyer Valley in week six, but the Rockets soared to a win.

The story early on for the Rockets was their strong running game that got them points early. Boyer Valley grabbed a score, but were unable to get the PAT, while Ar-We-Va got on the board three times. Will Ragaller continued to showcase his speed as he got three rushing touchdowns and after only the first quarter racked up 160 rushing yards to give the Rockets the 20-6 lead. Early in the second quarter Ragaller continued to roll as he found the endzone again off an eight-yard run and was able to intercept the Bulldogs for a 14-yard interception touchdown. Boyer Valley got on the board as well in the second quarter with two touchdowns, but were unable to convert their PATs. The Rockets rolled to a 33-18 lead going into halftime.

A late 1st half score gave them the momentum heading into half. The Wildcats battled hard in the 3rd quarter with Caden Smith having a big 2nd half catching the ball but the Panthers’ size wore down the Wildcats and they pulled away in the 4th quarter.

Glidden Ralston opened the game with a nice drive, pounding the ball on the ground and Bryson Ertz broke off a long run to put them ahead 6-0.
