Recap stories for local football games on Friday, September 10th
Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson At Carroll
Carroll 24
Thomas Jefferson 14
It was a good win for Carroll on Friday night as the Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season. The Tigers received another solid performance from the defense, got a couple big plays in special teams and good work from Cooper Ludwig and Jireh Gallegos in the run game.
Remy Richardson nearly put the Tigers up 7-0 on the opening kickoff. He faked a reverse to Zack Dirkx and picked up a wall down the Tigers sideline. Richardson nearly scored but stumbled down at the Yellow Jackets 10 yard line. Carroll wasn’t able to score and settled for a 23-yard field goal from Elijah Lee. The Tiger defense gave up some yards to Austin Schubert on the ground as he broke contain in the 1st half and scrambled but they forced Council Bluff Thomas Jefferson to punt twice and stopped them on 4th down, ending a 9-play drive early in the 2nd quarter. Thomas Jefferson had a chance to tie the game late in the 1st quarter but missed a 24-yard field goal.

The Tigers offense was struggling to run between the tackles early and were forced to punt twice on 3 and outs. It was still 3-0 late in the half when the passing game sparked the Tigers. Ethan Lengeling found Nick Macke on a crossing pattern after Carroll took over at midfield. Macke broke free on the second play of the drive and made the catch across the middle, he sidestepped a defensive back, finding a seam and out running everyone to the end zone for a 38-yard touchdown to put Carroll up 10-0 with :08 seconds left in the half.
The Yellow Jackets answered to start the 3rd with their best drive of the game and Austin Schubert hit Braetyn Couse for a 15-yard touchdown on 4th down. The perfectly thrown ball found Couse in stride and the Tigers lead was down to four after the extra point was blocked. The Tigers were forced to punt and the Yellow Jackets gained momentum when they blocked the Nolan Mohr punt, taking over at the Tigers 44-yard line. Carroll defense came up big and forced Thomas Jefferson to punt. Carroll again wasn’t able to move the ball and Mohr went back to punt. This time he scooped up a low snap and started to run as the pressure went passed him. He made a nifty sidestep of a potential tackler and picked up the first down to extend the Carroll drive. That play sparked the Tigers who marched down the field and scored on a 1-yard run by Ethan Lengeling.
Carroll 17- 6 lead was short lived as Thomas Jefferson went back to Couse, this time finding him down the sidelines for a 51-yard touchdown. They went for two and cut the Carroll lead to 17-14. Carroll special teams sparked the Tigers again as Remy Richardson again scooped up the kickoff and faked the handoff to Dirkx. Richardson showed his nifty moves and set the Tigers up at the Thomas Jefferson 47. Ethan Lengling capped off the drive with another 1-yard plunge behind his center Nolan Mohr and Carroll was up 10 with 2:17 left. Carroll stripped the ball away from Couse and recovered the fumble on the Yellow Jackets first play. Carroll forced Thomas Jefferson to burn their timeouts and gave them back back with 0:40 left.
